NCA Debuts Moderation Campaign
Washington, DC — A Treat Right campaign which advocates moderate candy consumption has been unveiled by the NCA.
The campaign aims to inform the public that candy does have a place in a lifestyle that supports health, wellness and happiness. The campaign describes moderation as 50 to 100 calories per day from candy, which is the equivalent of 15 to 25 jelly beans, a fun size candy bar, or three to five pieces of hard candy. More examples of moderate consumption can be found at CandyUSA.com.
Zara Khaleeli, manager of science and public policy, and Laura Shumow, director of technical and regulatory affairs, have already interacted with thousands of dietitians to discuss candy's role in a healthy and balanced lifestyle. More than 1,000 Treat Right moderation charts have been handed out, as well as 2,000 examples of moderate amounts of candy at a food and nutrition event.
Khaleeli says: “Since 97 percent of American consumers eat candy, it is appropriate to show them a way that it can fit into a healthy diet.”
