Washington, DC — A Treat Right campaign which advocates moderate candy consumption has been unveiled by the NCA.

The campaign aims to inform the public that candy does have a place in a lifestyle that supports health, wellness and happiness. The campaign describes moderation as 50 to 100 calories per day from candy, which is the equivalent of 15 to 25 jelly beans, a fun size candy bar, or three to five pieces of hard candy. More examples of moderate consumption can be found at [1] CandyUSA.com.

Zara Khaleeli, manager of science and public policy, and Laura Shumow, director of technical and regulatory affairs, have already interacted with thousands of dietitians to discuss candy's role in a healthy and balanced lifestyle. More than 1,000 Treat Right moderation charts have been handed out, as well as 2,000 examples of moderate amounts of candy at a food and nutrition event.

Khaleeli says: “Since 97 percent of American consumers eat candy, it is appropriate to show them a way that it can fit into a healthy diet.”
