Self-Checkouts Seen As Differentiators

Duluth, GA — More than half of shoppers want to see self-checkout lines expanded in mass, drug and c-stores, and believe retailers who offer self-checkout provide better customer service, according to technology firm NCR Corp.

A majority of shoppers cited the speed of service at self-checkouts as the reason they prefer the option, NCR says.

Further, basket size is the main factor in determining whether shoppers use cashier-assisted or self-checkouts, the firm reports. Additionally, 16 percent of shoppers using cashier-assisted checkouts said they prefer the option, while 12 percent cited the lack of a line at the assisted checkout.

Scott Kingsfield, senior vice-president and general manager, NCR Retail, says: “Shoppers recognize the speed and value self-checkout provides and are eager to see it expanded into other retail segments. Retailers increasingly are finding their shoppers want choices in how they interact with stores at which they shop.”
