Northfield, IL — Kraft Foods Inc. is nearing the end of its program to reduce sodium in in its North American products by an average of 10 percent.
The three-year initiative will be completed by the end of 2012, the company says. Kraft's efforts have already resulted in the removal of 14 million pounds of salt annually from the North American diet.
Since the program began, Kraft has reduced sodium levels in more than 1,000 SKUs across 24 product categories, offering more than 100 products that contain low, reduced, or no sodium.
Kraft reports that many of its products have surpassed the goal of 10 percent. For example, Kraft says it lowered the sodium levels of its Teddy Grahams Honey Graham Snacks by 25 percent while also raising whole grain content to eight grams per serving.
