Shrewsbury, MA — Consumers’ weight loss is more dependent on overall caloric consumption than on the type of sugar involved, according to researchers from Rippe Lifestyle Institute.
The study compared weight loss results among consumers who reduced their calorie intake and found that outcomes were similar regardless of whether table sugar or high-fructose corn syrup were used.
James M. Rippe, lead researcher, says: “This lends further support to findings by our research group and others that table sugar and HFCS are metabolically equivalent.”
He adds: “Misinformation about added sugars, particularly high-fructose corn syrup, has caused many people to lose sight of the fact there is no silver bullet when it comes to weight loss. A reduction in calorie consumption, along with exercise and a balanced diet, is what’s most important when it comes to weight loss.”
