Cleveland — The use of alternative sweeteners is expected to increase 3.3 percent annually through 2015, according to market research firm Freedonia Group.

The researcher says that the growth will be driven by relatively new products in the industry such as stevia extract rebiana-A, while more mature sweeteners such as sucralose and sorbitol will also see gains.

In addition, xylitol is projected to see growth with an extended presence in chewing gum applications. The researcher says this is a result of its profile's ability to add sweetness, enhance mint flavors and improve dental health.

Market trends toward “natural” ingredients are expected to increase the use of luo han guo (monk fruit) and agave nectar, which has been positioned as an alternative to high fructose corn syrup, Freedonia says.
