EXPO Sets New Date
Chicago — The dates for the next SWEETS & SNACKS EXPO have changed, with the event now set to take place May 8 to 10, 2012.
The NCA says the move is in an effort to avoid conflicts with an event being held at McCormick Place — NATO’s G8 Summit for world leaders.
The decision to change the dates made the best business sense for the industry because of the heightened security and logistics the G8 Summit requires, explains Larry Graham, NCA president.
“Chicago has welcomed our annual EXPO since its inception 15 years ago, so it is no surprise that city officials, along with leadership at McCormick Place, have gone above and beyond and together we decided on a mutually acceptable alternative,” Graham says.
The annual EXPO will keep the Tuesday through Thursday date pattern continually requested by customers, according to the NCA.
“We recognize that the NCA made a very difficult decision to change its event schedule to accommodate the G8 Summit,” says Don Welsh, president and CEO of the Chicago Convention & Tourism Bureau. “We are very grateful for the NCA’s support of Chicago in shifting the dates to early May to keep their highly successful SWEETS & SNACKS EXPO at McCormick Place.”
Tim Quinn, vice-president trade development at Mars Chocolate North America and chairman of the EXPO committee, adds: “We recognized a huge value to our industry in keeping the event anchored in Chicago and worked hard to secure dates that would not interfere with other industry events both domestic and internationally.&rdquo
In addition, the NRA show, which traditionally leads into the EXPO, has changed its dates to May 5 to 8.
