Shearer's Awarded Platinum LEED Certification
Brewster, OH — Celebrating its recognition as the first LEED platinum snack food facility in the country, Shearer’s Foods, Inc. held a tour and ribbon cutting Friday at the site.
Having completed phase one of the company’s Millennium Manufacturing Facility, the site comprises 64,000-square-feet of production space.
According to Melissa Shearer, vice-president of communications, the building was constructed with a focus on energy efficiency, including the use of high levels of wall and roof insulation, argon windows, and a reflective white roof.
In addition, more than 90 percent of the site’s heat will be supplied by recovered waste heat from production equipment. Water use is said to be reduced as Shearer’s installed low-flow and waterless plumbing fixtures and claims up to 17,000 gallons of water per month will be gained through rainwater harvesting.
The new plant will produce several varieties of tortilla chips with a capacity of more than 17 million pounds per year with room to expand, says Shearer.
