Senate Passes Child Nutrition Bill

Washington, DC — The Child Nutrition bill, which will establish nutritional criteria for foods sold in schools, was unanimously approved by the U.S. Senate on Thursday.

Candy and snacks sold in vending machines would be subject to standards established by the $4.5 billion bill, which would also determine what foods are allowed in school lunches.

“I am thrilled that Congress has taken a major step forward today in passing the Child Nutrition bill -- a groundbreaking piece of legislation that will help us provide healthier school meals to children across America and will play an integral role in our efforts to combat childhood obesity,” First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement released from the White House.

The NCA supports efforts to reduce childhood obesity, including the “Let’s Move” initiative. A similar bill is awaiting a House vote.
