GRAS Approval For Degradable Gum

London — A degradable chewing gum polymer has received Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) FDA approval, sources report.

Gum made from the ingredient would degrade in less than two years if on pavement, and between two and three months in a drain, according to its developer, Revolymer.

Planning to launch the ingredient in the U.S. during the fourth quarter, Revolymer CEO Roger Pettman said an independent panel comprising former FDA officials approved the polymer. The company says it has also developed a non-stick gum that can be easily removed from sidewalks and other surfaces.
