Digital Coupons Outpace Newspaper Offerings

Mountain View, CA — Digital coupon use grew 100 percent with more than $1 billion in savings printed or loaded to store loyalty cards for the year ending June 30, 2010, outpacing newspaper-distributed coupons 10 to one, according to Coupons.com, Inc.

Printed coupon savings in June exceeded $110 million, while in comparison, total savings from printed coupons and those loaded onto loyalty cards through 2009 were at $529 million.

More than 20 percent of U.S. consumers, some 46 million shoppers, are using online coupons, up from 40 million in 2008. Further, Coupons.com reports Internet searches for the term “printable coupons” has increased 67 percent from the previous year.

Citing a report from Razorfish, the company says the number one reason consumers follow a brand on Twitter or liked a brand on Facebook was access to exclusive deals and offers.

Ready-to-eat cereal is the most popular product for which online printable coupons are used. Portable snacks came in at number five on the top 10 list.
