Non-Chocolate Leads Candy Sales Increase
Washington, DC — Confectionery dollar sales rose four percent for the 52 week period ending April 19, 2010, according to SymphonyIRI Group, Inc.
“The 2010 Easter confectionery selling season performed well for the confectionery category,” says Jenn Ellek, director of trade communications for the NCA, noting for the 12-week holiday selling period, there was a 3.8 percent sales increase.
Non-chocolate candy sales led the increase with 5.6 percent growth for the year, followed by gum with a 3.8 percent jump.
In terms of channels, chocolate candy in FDMx registered a 2.3 percent sales increase, while drug stores reported a 1.3 percent rise. Grocery rebounded from the same period in 2009 with a 5.7 percent sales hike, nearly double the previous year’s figures.
