Washington State Adds Candy Tax
Olympia, WA — A 6.5 percent sales tax on candy is part of a multimillion-dollar tax package signed by Gov. Chris Gregoire, despite determined opposition by local confectioners.
During the months leading up to the decision, representatives from Seattle Chocolate Co. and Brown & Haley claimed the tax will have a negative impact on the local job market.
Jean Thompson, CEO of Seattle Chocolate, tells Candy & Snack TODAY: “We all had a common interest to protect our market share against other products. We wanted to do what was right for everyone.”
The tax increases, which cover many categories and services, are expected to help fill the state budget’s projected $2.8 billion deficit, sources report.
Thompson adds that taxes will also be implemented on soda and bottled water, but notes they are through 2013.
The tax on candy will be implemented later this year.
